BROCCOLI

We've had some ups and downs with our efforts to grow broccoli. It requires very fertile soil to produce good sized heads. Most of what we harvest are actually side shoots that are formed after the main head is cut. Since the side shoots are small and numerous, they are a pain to harvest, but they are tender and delicious. Broccoli is usually distributed in 1/2-1lb bags that are a mix of small heads and side shoots. Hopefully as we get better with broccoli we'll be able to provide more of it to each share.

Broccoli will store for a week or more in a plastic bag in the fridge, but the quality steadily deteriorates. If you get too much, it's a simple process to freeze your surplus (just follow the instructions for freezing green beans). We sometimes prepare broccoli just like green beans almandine (see green beans page for recipe). It's also delicious steamed and served with butter, salt and pepper. A lot of people like to eat raw broccoli dipped in ranch dressing or another veggie dip. But be warned that our broccoli is often, for some unknown reason, spicy when eat raw. It's still ok to eat with dip, but just be prepared for a zesty kick as it goes down! My mother used to serve steamed broccoli and cauliflower with a thick cheddar cheese sauce when we were growing up. That was the only way she could get me to eat it back then! See the cauliflower page for a recipe.
